A year ago, Moria camp on Lesvos burned to the ground. We woke up to thousands of people on the streets and promises from EU officials that “there would be no more Morias”. A year has passed and instead the Greek government, with the support of the European Union, has only hardened their approach to migration and criminalisation of asylum seekers.

Together with 44 NGOs and civil society groups, we have released a joint policy brief urging the European Union and Greek government to abandon their current approach to migration: instead of working on integration and participation, they are building fences and concrete walls around dozens of existing camps, setting up new closed camps in remote locations on the Aegean islands and passing new legislation aiming to further restrict the freedom of movement of camp residents and access for NGOs and journalists.
