Northwest Syria, demonstration ongoing at the Bab al-Hawa border crossing: "We need help now!"

On the third day since the first devastating earthquake, no international aid has yet passed through the Bab al-Hawa crossing, the only one authorized to date by the UN Security Council to reach northwest Syria from Turkey.

The passage through Bab al-Hawa of convoys transporting the bodies of Syrian people from Turkey to north-west Syria is shocking and outrageous. The crossing is functional, convoys can pass, but no humanitarian, medical or rescue team has arrived in the area.  A spontaneous demonstration by residents is underway to demand immediate relief for the population.

Abdulkafi Alhamdo, Program Manager of Still I Rise in northwest Syria, reports on what is happening directly from the Bab al-Hawa crossing: “They are leaving thousands of people to die, without aid, without food, without medicine. It is a clear message of the international community's lies about the disruption of access to first aid material in northwest Syria. How can they do this to us, in the face of a tragedy like this? How can they put political interests ahead, once again? I saw dozens of houses on the ground, people under the rubble, people on top trying to help others, and all the aid is directed to the regime-controlled areas. The situation is catastrophic, we need help now!”
